Oneonta, Geneseo Secure Top Seeds in SUNYAC Women’s Soccer Tournament

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Oneonta and Geneseo finished the SUNYAC regular season last week tied at 9-0-1 to earn opening-round byes into the semifinals. The tournament will begin with play-in games on Monday, November 3rd on the campuses of the higher seeds. The semifinals and finals will be held at the Hall of Fame Fields in Oneonta, NY on November 7th and 8th. Both semifinal games on Friday will kickoff at 11:00 a.m. and the championship on Saturday will be also be played at 11:00 a.m.
Oneonta and Geneseo rolled through SUNYAC play combining for 17 shutouts this year. The Blue Knights surrendered just one goal and shutout their opponents nine out of ten games, one short of the SUNYAC record for shutouts in a season set by last year’s Oneonta team (10). The Red Dragons are currently riding a 58-game conference unbeaten streak (57-0-1) dating back to the 1999 season. In their only meeting this season, Oneonta and Geneseo battled to a 0-0 draw. Oneonta won the resulting shootout tie-breaker to get the top seed. Both teams met in last year’s SUNYAC Championship game that also ended tied 0-0 with the Red Dragons claiming the title in a shootout.
Third-seeded Plattsburgh State finished conference play at 7-3 and will host sixth-seeded Fredonia in an opening-round play-in game. The Cardinals feature an explosive offense that leads the nation in Division III in scoring with 80 goals. Fredonia clinched the last playoff berth on the final day of the regular season on Saturday with a 3-0 win over SUNYIT. The Blue Devils finished 5-4-1 after going 2-6-2 a year ago. Plattsburgh rolled to a 5-1 win over Fredonia in their meeting in mid-October.
Fourth-seeded Cortland wrapped up the fourth seed last week with a 2-1 overtime win over Oswego. The Red Dragons went 6-3-1 in the SUNYAC and will oppose the fifth-seeded Brockport Golden Eagles. Brockport ended the year 6-4 in the conference standings and will look to avenge a 3-2 loss to the Red Dragons earlier in the year.
