ONEONTA DEFEATS GENESEO IN PENALTY KICKS,
ONEONTA, NY It took 110 minutes and penalty kicks before a champion could be named in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) womens soccer tournament this afternoon at the National Soccer Hall of Fame Fields. The game officially ended in a 0-0 tie, and for the first time in womens tournament history, penalty kicks were used to decide the conference champion. In the end, Oneonta defeated Geneseo 4-2 in penalty kicks. The teams battled through regulation and two overtime periods, but each team was not without several scoring chances. Oneontas Brooke Davis (Grand Gorge/Stamford) missed on a breakaway opportunity in the games third minute. Geneseo had scoring opportunities throughout, particularly in the 69th minute with several close range shots. In the penalty kick round, Oneontas goalkeeper, Laura Morcone (Mechanicville/Mechanicville) stopped two of Geneseos four shots. Converting for the Lady Knights was Heather Trottier (Webster/Webster) and Jackie Fertitta (Roslyn/Herricks). Oneontas goal scorers in the penalty kick round included Sanada Mujanovic (Centereach/Centereach), Kelly Stevens (Rochester/Churchville-Chili), Tricia Jaeger (Baldwin/Baldwin) and Sarah Tauber (Valley Stream/Valley Stream North). Geneseo falls to 13-4-5. Oneonta improves to 18-2-2 and receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
