ONEONTA DEFEATS GENESEO IN PENALTY KICKS,
CLAIMS WOMEN’S SOCCER TITLE

Fourth straight conference title for Red Dragons

ONEONTA, NY – It took 110 minutes and penalty kicks before a champion could be named in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women’s soccer tournament this afternoon at the National Soccer Hall of Fame Fields. The game officially ended in a 0-0 tie, and for the first time in women’s tournament history, penalty kicks were used to decide the conference champion. In the end, Oneonta defeated Geneseo 4-2 in penalty kicks.

The teams battled through regulation and two overtime periods, but each team was not without several scoring chances. Oneonta’s Brooke Davis (Grand Gorge/Stamford) missed on a breakaway opportunity in the game’s third minute. Geneseo had scoring opportunities throughout, particularly in the 69th minute with several close range shots.

In the penalty kick round, Oneonta’s goalkeeper, Laura Morcone (Mechanicville/Mechanicville) stopped two of Geneseo’s four shots. Converting for the Lady Knights was Heather Trottier (Webster/Webster) and Jackie Fertitta (Roslyn/Herricks). Oneonta’s goal scorers in the penalty kick round included Sanada Mujanovic (Centereach/Centereach), Kelly Stevens (Rochester/Churchville-Chili), Tricia Jaeger (Baldwin/Baldwin) and Sarah Tauber (Valley Stream/Valley Stream North).

Geneseo falls to 13-4-5. Oneonta improves to 18-2-2 and receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
