Oneonta Wins Women's SUNYAC Basketball Championships

Oneonta earns first-round bye in NCAA Tournament

FREDONIA, NY – The Oneonta Red Dragons women's basketball team captured the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Basketball Championship Saturday after defeating Cortland 68-63 in the finals.

Oneonta entered the 2001 tournament with the number one seed after winning the tie-breaking coin flip against number two seed Cortland. Both teams ended the regular season with a 19-1 record with their only losses of the season being against each other. In the quarterfinals Oneonta defeated Plattsburgh 83-70 and went on to defeat Fredonia 62-58 in the semifinals.

Saturday's win over Cortland not only gives Oneonta the SUNYAC Championship, but also an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with a first-round bye. The Red Dragons will look to keep their 24 game winning streak alive when they face the winner of Cortland State/St. Lawrence on Saturday, March 3.
