OSWEGO WINS 2006 SUNYAC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Lakers defeat Cortland Red Dragons, 61-56

 

UTICA, NY – The Oswego Lakers women’s basketball team captured the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Basketball title defeating Cortland 61-56 in the finals today at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. 

 

Oswego jumped out to a 12-8 lead at 16:17 of the first, before Cortland went on a 10-4 run to take a 21-16 lead. The lead changed once again before the close of the half, as the Lakers took a 27-24 lead to close out the period. The Lakers led by as many as eleven in the second half with 3:26 remaining in the contest. Cortland brought the game to within two at 1:03 and again with 26 seconds left but that’s as close as the Red Dragons would come before the Lakers hit six of six free throws to seal the win.

 

Samantha Driscoll (Lisle/Whitney Point) led Oswego with 16 points, including three buckets from the arc. Sarah Lombard (Saratoga Springs) added nine points and grabbed a game high 14 rebounds for the Lakers. Kaylin VanDusen (Schuyler/West Canada Valley) scored 21 points, on 4-10 from the field and 11-13 from the line to lead the Red Dragons.

 

Oswego improves to 21-6 and earns an automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA Division III tournament.
