February 23, 2004 Jacey Brooks, Buffalo State Sophomore, Forward (Machias/Franklinville) Brooks helped lead Buffalo State to victories against fourth place Geneseo and third place Oswego last week. She averaged 14.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest to secure a fifth place finish in the SUNYAC for the Bengals. Brooks was 9-of-15 from the floor and scored 21 points with nine rebounds in a 72-66 win over Geneseo on February 17. The sophomore forward also turned in a 14-point, six-rebound, two-steal effort in a 75-62 victory over Oswego on February 20. Brooks is leading scorer for Buffalo State and her 13.4 points per game in the SUNYAC is sixth-best. The Bengals are seeded fifth among eight teams in this week's SUNYAC Tournament. Buffalo State (13-12, 11-5) will play at fourth-seeded Geneseo (17-8, 11-5) in a quarterfinal game on Tuesday (Feb. 24) at 6:00 p.m. February 16, 2004 Michelle Ciquera, Cortland Senior, Forward (Massapequa/Massapequa) Ciquera averaged 22.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 5.3 steals per game while leading the Red Dragons to a 3-0 week. The senior forward also shot 61 percent from the field to help Cortland stay in contention for the league's regular season title. Ciquera was 11-of-16 from the floor and pumped in 24 points in a convincing 76-48 win over Oneonta on February 10. Two days later, Ciquera scored a career-high 27 points and had nine rebounds and nine steals in a 76-59 triumph over D'Youville. She closed out the week with 15 points and four rebounds in an 83-41 win over SUNY New Paltz on February 14. Ciquera, who begins the final week of the regular season with 967 career points, is the Red Dragons second leading scorer and fifth in the SUNYAC at 13.6 points per game. She leads the conference with 4.23 steals per contest. The Red Dragons begin the final week of the regular season with a 12-1 mark in the SUNYAC and are tied for first place with Oswego. Cortland will also carry an eight-game winning streak and an overall mark of 19-3 into the final week. Ciquera, who was also the SUNYAC Player of the Week on November 23, is the second Cortland player in as many weeks to earn honor. Sophomore guard Dani Maye was last week's recipient. February 9, 2004 Dani Maye, Cortland Sophomore, Guard (Kirkwood/Windsor) Maye kept Cortland in the hunt for the SUNYAC regular-season title and helped lead the Red Dragons to three wins over conference opponents this past week. Maye averaged 17.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and was 11-of-22 from three-point range for the week. She scored 21 points and tied a career-high with five three-point field goals in an 81-51 win over SUNY IT on February 2. Maye had 11 points and five rebounds in a hard-fought 61-58 win over Geneseo on February 6 and followed that up with a 20-point, six-rebound effort in a 60-46 win over Fredonia the next day. Maye is third in the SUNYAC in scoring at 14.5 points per game. Her effort helped Cortland extend its winning streak to five in a row. The Red Dragons have also won nine of their last 10 games and are tied with Oswego for first place in the SUNYAC with a record of 10-1. Cortland is now 16-3 overall. February 2, 2004 Jessica Chambers, Geneseo Sophomore, Forward (Oneida/Oneida) Chambers helped lead the Blue Knights to three conference wins including a 62-51 victory over Oneonta, who entered the game with 7-0 record in conference play. Chambers was nearly perfect from the floor in a 62-51 win over previously-unbeaten Oneonta hitting 9-of-10 shots to finish the game with 20 points and four rebounds. The Oneida, New York resident also registered 14 points and five rebounds in a 63-45 triumph over SUNY New Paltz and had nine points and three rebounds in a 79-53 win over SUNYIT. Chambers hit 18-of-28 shots from the floor for the week and averaged 14.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Her effort helped raise Geneseo's record to 12-6 overall and 6-3 in the SUNYAC. Chambers is the second leading scorer for Geneseo with a 10.4 points per game average. She is also averaging 4.7 rebounds per contest and shooting .503 from the field. January 26, 2004 Sally Shuster, Oswego Junior, Guard (East Amherst/Sacred Heart) Shuster enjoyed an outstanding week on the perimeter for the Lakers who won three conference games to stay within a half game of first-place Oneonta. The Lakers improved to 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the SUNYAC behind Shuster who averaged 14.7 points per game and shot .536 (15-of-28) from the field and .590 (13-of-22) from three-point range. The East Amherst, New York resident began the week with 14 points and a trio of three-pointers in a 105-70 win over Fredonia. She then tied a school record with eight three-point field goals in a 73-43 win over SUNY New Paltz on January 23. The next day, she drained a pair of three-point field goals to help the Lakers earn their first-ever win over Cortland, 56-53. Shuster is the third different Oswego player to be named SUNYAC Player of the Week this season. She is averaging 8.4 points per game off the bench for head coach Michelle Collins. January 19, 2004 Heather Martin, Fredonia Junior, Forward (Allegany/Allegany-Limestone) Martin averaged 18.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals, and 2.0 blocks per game for the Blue Devils this past week. She had 21 points, four rebounds, and sank a trio of three-point field goals in a 67-43 non-conference win over Medaille. Four days later, Martin followed up that effort with 18 points, four rebounds, and four steals in a 63-54 loss to conference rival New Paltz on Saturday. Martin has scored in double figures in each of the Blue Devils' last four games. She is third on the team in scoring (10.8), fourth in rebounding (4.2) and has made a team-best 14 three-point field goals. Martin is the second Fredonia player to be honored in as many weeks. Katie Estes shared the SUNYAC Player of the Week award with New Paltz's Kerri Kelty last Monday. January 12, 2004 Co-Players of the Week Kerri Kelty, New Paltz Freshman, Guard (Valley Stream/Valley Stream) Kelty averaged 15.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game in a pair of New Paltz victories last week. She had 10 points, four rebounds, and one assist in a hard-fought 47-37 win over City College of New York on Jan. 8. Two days later, Kelty had 20 points and 10 assists in an 82-76 victory over Skidmore. Kelty shot .529 from the field and was 4-of-8 from three-point range during the two games. Her performance helped the Hawks climb to 3-6 on the season. Katie Estes, Fredonia Junior, Forward (Olean/Olean) Estes helped lead Fredonia to a 2-0 week as well. She averaged 15.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game. Estes had 13 points and 10 rebounds in a 65-59 win over William Smith. She began the week with an 18-point, four-rebound effort in a 77-69 victory over Hilbert. Estes leads the Blue Devils in scoring (12.6) and rebounding (7.9). Fredonia stands at 4-6 on the season. January 5, 2004 Arin Belden, Geneseo Senior, Guard (Warsaw/Warsaw) Belden helped lead the Blue Knights to the Wilkes Tournament championship over the weekend. The senior guard averaged 10.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists per game to earn the tournament's Most Valuable Player award. Belden scored 15 points with eight rebounds and three assists in a 64-44 triumph over Susquehanna in the title game. A resident of Warsaw, New York, Belden helped Geneseo (5-3, 1-2) extend its winning streak to four in a row. She is averaging 7.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per contest.
