BROCKPORT PICKED TO PLACE FIRST IN
SUNYAC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Brockport women look to keep pace with men

FREDONIA, NYLike their male counterparts, the Brockport Golden Eagles women’s basketball team is favored to finish first in the 2002-03 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) regular season, according to a vote by the conference coaches.  Coaches were not allowed to rank their own teams on their preseason ballots.

Brockport received seven first-place votes as they look to improve on their 2001-02 season in which they finished the regular season 13-3 in the conference and 17-9 overall.  The Golden Eagles defeated Geneseo in the quarterfinal round of last year’s tournament but lost to Cortland 67-61 in the semifinals.

Cortland received three first-place votes and finished second in this year’s poll.  The Red Dragons look to make it back to the SUNYAC finals where they lost last year to Buffalo State 56-50.  Like Brockport, they also finished the 2001-02 regular season with a 13-3 conference record.

Buffalo State, the defending 2002 SUNYAC champion, received one first-place vote and was picked to finish third with 78 points.  The Bengals finished the 2001-02 season 15-1 in the conference and lost to Ohio Wesleyan in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
