BROCKPORT WINS 2003 SUNYAC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Golden Eagles defeat Cortland 64-57

UTICA, NY – The Brockport Golden Eagles women’s basketball team captured their first-ever State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Basketball title defeating Cortland 64-57 in the finals today at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

Brockport jumped out to an early 11-2 lead and was up by five at halftime.  Cortland (16-12) battled back and took their first lead of the game on a three-pointer by Dani Maye (Kirkwood/Windsor) with 11:46 left in the game.  The teams traded baskets before Brockport took the lead for good at the 3:51 mark when Kristen Clark (Hilton/Hilton) was fouled and made the first of two free throws.  Clark, this year’s SUNYAC Player of the Year and tournament MVP, led all scorers with 21 points.  Meghan Squires (Johnsonville/Hoosic Valley) was dominant under the boards for Brockport with 11 rebounds while adding 12 points.

Michelle Ciquera (Massapequa/Massapequa) led the Red Dragons with 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Brockport improves to 21-7 and earns an automatic bid to the 2003 NCAA Division III tournament.  This year’s selection show can be viewed online at either www.ncaachampionships.com or www.d3hoops.com.
