SUNYAC ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF THE WOMEN’S AND MEN’S
BASKETBALL COACH OF THE YEAR AWARDS

 

FREDONIA, NYGeneseo’s Kris Ruffo and Buffalo State’s Dick Bihr were named this year’s State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year and Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year, respectively, as voted on by the conference coaches. 

 

In her first season with the Knights, Ruffo’s squad improved on their 8-8 record of a year ago to finish atop the conference standings with a 15-1 record.  The Knights clinched the regular season title and earned the top seed in the 2003 SUNYAC Basketball tournament.  Geneseo lost to Fredonia in the first round of the tournament, but continue their post season play as the No. 1 seed in the 2003 ECAC Division III Women’s Upstate Basketball Championship.  Geneseo will host eighth-seeded Cazenovia on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

 

Bihr, in his 23rd season at Buffalo State, earns his sixth Coach of the Year award.  Under his leadership, the Bengals finished the regular season 11-5 in conference play and entered this year’s tournament as the No. 3 seed.  Buffalo State defeated Oswego 67-62 in the semifinals and New Paltz in the finals (73-40) to win their 17th SUNYAC Championship and a berth in the 2003 NCAA Division III tournament.  The Bengals will travel to Scranton on Thursday for the first round game.
