The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC)
announced Amanda McKenzie (Pavilion/Pavilion) as the Women's
Volleyball Player of the Week for week ending November 3, 2002. McKenzie,
a senior setter, helped lead Geneseo to a fifth place finish in the
NYSWCAA tournament. Her tournament play, including 102 assists and
46 digs, earned her First Team All-State honors. She is also the conference
assist leader with 10.16 assists per game. Geneseo heads into this
weekend's SUNYAC Championship tournament seeded No. 2 with a 23-11,
5-3 record.
October 28, 2002
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC)
announced Lyndsey Celeste (Clarence/Clarence) as the Women's
Volleyball Player of the Week for week ending Oct. 27, 2002. Celeste,
a junior setter helped lead Brockport to a 4-0 showing at the second
SUNYAC Pool Play held this past weekend. The Golden Eagles defeated
Fredonia, Buffalo State, Oswego and Geneseo to claim sole possession
of first place in the West Division with a 7-1 conference record.
Playing in a total of 16 games, Celeste averaged 10.375 assists, .75
aces and 3.25 digs per game. She also had a season high 53 assists
in the win over Fredonia.
October 21, 2002
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC)
announced Bridget Caffrey (Rochester/Greece-Athena) and Erin
Hutchinson (East Aurora/Red Jacket) as the Women's Volleyball
Co-Players of the Week for week ending Oct. 20, 2002. Caffrey helped
Fredonia extend its winning streak to 11 matches as they went on to
win the Oswego Invitational over the weekend. This is the second straight
year the Blue Devils have won the tournament. The junior was named
tournament MVP and led the team with 4.611 digs per game, including
a 30 dig performance in the championship game against Oswego. Fredonia
improves its record to
21-7, 2-2.
Hutchinson led Plattsburgh to a 3-1 record over the weekend as the
Cardinals hosted and won the Best-Western-Ground Round Cardinal Classic.
The junior middle-hitter was named tournament MVP and recorded 56
kills, 12 blocks and a .330 hitting percentage in four matches. Plattsburgh's
record is 16-17, 3-2 SUNYAC.
October 14, 2002
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC)
announced Krista Wierzbicki (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) as the Women's
Volleyball Player of the Week for week ending Oct. 13, 2002.Wierzbicki
led Buffalo State as the Bengals defeated Rochester on Tuesday and
won the Hiram Invitational over the weekend, defeating Medaille, Pitt-Bradford
and Hiram. On the week, the junior setter recorded a total of 136
assists, seven aces, 42 digs and had zero service errors. Last week,
she was fifth in the conference in assists with 8.10 per game and
tied for first with .63 service aces per game.
Buffalo State is 16-8, 2-2 SUNYAC.
October 7, 2002
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC)
announced Liz Mellander (Pavilion/Pavilion) as the Women's
Volleyball Player of the Week for week ending Oct. 6, 2002. Mellander,
a junior outside hitter, had an outstanding week, setting career highs
for kills in a game (17) and digs in a game (35) this past week as
Fredonia defeated Pitt-Bradford, Elmira, Scranton and Widener. For
the week, the junior outside hitter recorded 51 kills, 86 digs and
a .269 hitting percentage. Fredonia is currently 15-7, 2-2 SUNYAC.
September 30, 2002
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC)
announced Andrea Smith (San Diego, CA/Frontier Central, NY)
as the Women's Volleyball Player of the Week for week ending Sept.
29, 2002. Smith, a junior outside hitter, helped lead the Red Dragons
to a 4-1 showing at the SUNYAC Pool Play tournament held this past
weekend. Throughout the two-day event, Cortland recorded defeats over
New Paltz, Potsdam, SUNYIT and Plattsburgh, with their only loss coming
against Oneonta. The team also defeated Brockport earlier in the week.
Playing in a total of 19 games, Smith had 63 kills, one assist, 11
aces, 79 digs, 11 blocks and a .294 hitting percentage. She currently
leads Cortland with 195 kills and 306 digs and she also led the conference
in digs last week with 4.93 per game. Cortland is 15-4, 4-1 SUNYAC.
September 23, 2002
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC)
announced Lacey Musso (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River)
as the Women's Volleyball Player of the Week for period ending Sept.
22, 2002. Musso, a junior setter, helped lead the Red Dragons to a
3-1 showing at the Union College Invitational. On the season, she
has 102 kills, 192 assists, 88 digs, 14 blocks and 23 aces. Oneonta
currently holds a 12-3 record and had a New York Region ranking of
fourth last week.
September 16, 2002
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC)
announced Monica Polka (Youngstown/Lewiston-Porter) as the
women's Volleyball Player of the Week for period ending Sept. 15,
2002. Polka, a senior middle-hitter, helped lead the Bengals to a
tournament championship at the North Country Invitational for the
second-straight season. She was also named Most Valuable Player as
she helped guide Buffalo State to wins in all four matches, playing
13 games with only one loss. Her tournament stats include 72 kills,
a .447 hitting percentage, 3 assists, 11 aces, 27 digs and 31 total
blocks.
September 9, 2002
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC)
has announced Amanda McKenzie (Pavilion, NY/Pavilion) as the
first women's SUNYAC Volleyball Player of the Week for the 2002-03
season. McKenzie, a senior setter, helped lead the Lady Knights to
three wins at the Cortland Classic this past weekend. Through ten
games, she finished the weekend with nine kills, eight aces, 40 digs,
four blocks, 132 assists and an average hitting percentage of .375.
Geneseo is currently 3-1, with wins over Alfred, Keuka and Lebanon
Valley; Nazareth defeated the Lady Knights 0-3 in their first match
of the tournament.
