Red Dragons Earn Fourth
Title in Seven Years
The Cortland Red Dragons claimed the 2003 State University
of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tennis Championship held this weekend
at the Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius, NY. The Red Dragons swept all three
doubles titles and took four of the six singles flights en route to their
fourth championship in the last seven years. Cortland Head Coach Pete Cahill
was named SUNYAC Coach of the Year for guiding his team back to the top after
finishing third at the 2001 championships and fifth a year ago.
Cortland's Laurie Dorscheid (Fairport/Fairport) successfully defended
her first singles championship with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over New Paltz's
Kerry Farrell (Rockville Centre/South Side). Rebecca Sparacin (Goshen/Goshen)
also defended her championship in the second singles flight. Sparacin defeated
Krissy Feikert (N. Syracuse/Cicero-N. Syracuse) 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 to give
New Paltz its lone title after winning six a year ago. In third singles, Cortland's
Andrea TerBush (Liberty/Liberty) captured the championship defeating
Plattsburgh's Brit Montmeat (Old Lyme, CT/Lyme-Old Lyme) 6-1, 6-2.
Cortland's Sara Feikert (N. Syracuse/Cicero-N. Syracuse) defeated New
Paltz's Amie Larson (Port Jervis/Port Jervis) 6-2, 7-5 to earn the
fourth singles crown and Geneseo's Shalini Sudarsanan (Sherrill/VVS) won
the fifth singles flight defeating Cortland's Stephany Krauz (Huntington/Walt
Whitman) 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. In number six singles, Meredith McCaslin (Babylon/Babylon)
defeated Geneseo's Rene Smith (Rochester/Greece Athena) to earn Cortland
its fourth singles crown.
The Red Dragons rolled through doubles play winning all three flights. In
number one doubles, Dorscheid and Amanda Husson (Middletown/Middletown)
dropped only 11 games en route to the title. The duo defeated New Paltz's
Farrell and Sparacin 6-2, 6-1 in the finals. Sara Feikert
and Amanda TerBush earned the second doubles title with a 6-2, 6-4
victory over Geneseo's Nicole King (Caribou, ME/Scottsville)
and Rene Smith while Stacy Gordon (Rochester/Brighton)
and Stephany Krauz won the third doubles flight with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-1
win over Sara Goldstein (Merrick/Calhoun) and Amanda Rosario (Bronx/St.
