Cortland Claims SUNYAC Tennis Championship
Red Dragons Earn Fourth Title in Seven Years

 

The Cortland Red Dragons claimed the 2003 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tennis Championship held this weekend at the Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius, NY. The Red Dragons swept all three doubles titles and took four of the six singles flights en route to their fourth championship in the last seven years. Cortland Head Coach Pete Cahill was named SUNYAC Coach of the Year for guiding his team back to the top after finishing third at the 2001 championships and fifth a year ago.
Cortland's Laurie Dorscheid (Fairport/Fairport) successfully defended her first singles championship with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over New Paltz's Kerry Farrell (Rockville Centre/South Side). Rebecca Sparacin (Goshen/Goshen) also defended her championship in the second singles flight. Sparacin defeated Krissy Feikert (N. Syracuse/Cicero-N. Syracuse) 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 to give New Paltz its lone title after winning six a year ago. In third singles, Cortland's Andrea TerBush (Liberty/Liberty) captured the championship defeating Plattsburgh's Brit Montmeat (Old Lyme, CT/Lyme-Old Lyme) 6-1, 6-2. Cortland's Sara Feikert (N. Syracuse/Cicero-N. Syracuse) defeated New Paltz's Amie Larson (Port Jervis/Port Jervis) 6-2, 7-5 to earn the fourth singles crown and Geneseo's Shalini Sudarsanan (Sherrill/VVS) won the fifth singles flight defeating Cortland's Stephany Krauz (Huntington/Walt Whitman) 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. In number six singles, Meredith McCaslin (Babylon/Babylon) defeated Geneseo's Rene Smith (Rochester/Greece Athena) to earn Cortland its fourth singles crown.
The Red Dragons rolled through doubles play winning all three flights. In number one doubles, Dorscheid and Amanda Husson (Middletown/Middletown) dropped only 11 games en route to the title. The duo defeated New Paltz's Farrell and Sparacin 6-2, 6-1 in the finals. Sara Feikert and Amanda TerBush earned the second doubles title with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Geneseo's Nicole King (Caribou, ME/Scottsville) and Rene Smith while Stacy Gordon (Rochester/Brighton) and Stephany Krauz won the third doubles flight with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 win over Sara Goldstein (Merrick/Calhoun) and Amanda Rosario (Bronx/St. Jean Baptiste) of New Paltz.
