2003 SUNYAC Women’s Tennis Championship
New Paltz looks to claim second consecutive title

FREDONIA, NY – The 20th annual State University of New York Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship will be held October 10-12, 2003 at the Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius, NY.  Tournament play begins Friday at 6:00 p.m. and continues Saturday and Sunday starting at 8:00 a.m.

New Paltz will try to earn its second straight SUNYAC Championship after a dominating performance a year ago. Head Coach Rob Bruley's squad won four of six singles titles and two of three doubles championships en route to the team title. Despite losing several key players from the 2002 team, the defending champion Hawks return last year's number two singles champion Rebecca Sparacin (Goshen, NY/Goshen), number five singles champ Amie Larson (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis) and number one doubles champions Sparacin and Kerry Farrell (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side).

Geneseo will attempt to dethrone the Hawks after taking second at the 2002 championships. The Knight are looking for their third SUNYAC title in the last six years. Kelli Christopher (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) and Nicole King (Scottsville/Caribou, ME) are the defending number three doubles champions and King, Rene Smith (Rochester/Greece Athena), and Shalini Sudarsanan (Sherill/VVS) were all runners-up in their singles flights a year ago.

Cortland also has its eye on the 2003 championship. The Red Dragons have had success this year against SUNYAC opposition and return last year's number one singles champion Laurie Dorscheid (Fairport/Fairport).

Brockport, Fredonia, Oneonta, Oswego, Plattsburgh and Potsdam round out the teams participating in the tournament.
