2002 SUNYAC Women’s Tennis Championship
Geneseo looks to repeat as conference champions

FREDONIA, NY – The 19th annual State University of New York Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship will be held October 11-13, 2002 at the Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius, NY.  Tournament play begins Friday at 6:00 pm and continues Saturday and Sunday at 8:00 am.

Geneseo, the 2001 SUNYAC champion, under the direction of new head coach Jim Chen, will try to make it two in a row and their third title in five years.  The Lady Knights will be without last year’s first singles champion and lone individual title winner, Gena Tallarini, lost due to graduation.  Geneseo’s roster consists of five freshmen, so it’s up to last year’s participants, senior Katy Ringer (Naples/Naples) and sophomores Rene Smith (Rochester/Greece Athena) and Shalini Sudarsanan (Sherrill/Rye) to provide some tournament experience.

Plattsburgh will attempt to dethrone the Lady Knights after finishing just three points behind in second place last year, with third place finishes in 1999 and 2000.  The Cardinals look to defend their titles in sixth singles, as well as second and third doubles.

Brockport, Buffalo State, Cortland, Fredonia, New Paltz, Oneonta, Oswego and Potsdam round out the teams participating in the tournament.
