New Paltz Wins 2002 SUNYAC Women’s Tennis Championship

Hawks dominate by claiming six of nine titles

The New Paltz Hawks have claimed the 2002 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Tennis Championship held this weekend at the Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius, NY.  After placing sixth in the conference championship in 2001 and ninth in 2000, New Paltz dominated this year’s tournament with victories in four singles title matches, as well as wins in first and second doubles.  The Hawks competed in all but one title match.  Rob Bruley, the Hawks head coach, was also chosen as SUNYAC Coach of the Year.

Cortland’s Laurie Dorscheid (Rochester/Fairport) claimed the first singles title by defeating Oneonta’s Elizabeth Muller (Fredonia/Fredonia) 6-3, 6-0, for the Red Dragons lone tournament title.  New Paltz’s Rebecca Sparacin (Goshen/Goshen Central) won at second singles, defeating Catherine Lodico (Elmira/Elmira Free Academy) of Oneonta 6-3, 6-4.  In third singles, it was Megan Crevoiserat (Levittown/Division Avenue) of New Paltz defeating Geneseo’s Nicole King (Scottsville/Caribour, ME) 6-2, 6-0.  New Paltz continued to dominate the singles matches, as Jennifer Neumann (Port Jervis/Minisink Valley) defeated Geneseo’s Rene Smith (Rochester/Greece Athena) 6-1, 7-5, and Amie Larson (Port Jervis/Port Jervis) defeated Shalini Sudarsanan (Sherrill/VVS) of Geneseo 7-5, 6-4, to claim the fourth and fifth singles titles, respectively.  Rounding out singles play, it was Geneseo’s Katie Ringer (Naples/Naples) defeating New Paltz’s Gina Ciccarelli (New Paltz/Kingston) 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles action, the New Paltz duo of Kerry Farrell (Rockville Center/South Shore) and Rebecca Sparacin defeated Plattsburgh’s Katie DeCoursey (Herkimer/Herkimer) and Barbara Kosowsky (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill) in two sets, 6-3, 6-1, to claim the first doubles title.  DeCoursey and Kosowky were title winners last year in second doubles.

Megan Crevoiserat and Sophie Giret (Paris, France/Celsa Paris IV Shorbonne) teamed up to give New Paltz the second doubles championship by defeating Oneonta’s Catherine Lodico and Cordea Twiggs (Latham/Shaker) 6-3, 6-2.  Geneseo’s Kelli Christopher (Skaneateles/Skaneateles) and Nicole King ended the Hawks doubles winning streak by defeating Diana Lemanski (Babylon/Babylon) and Jessica Smith (Newport News, VA/Vernon-Vernona-Sherrill) 6-2, 6-2, to claim the third doubles championship.
