2006 SUNYAC Swimming and Diving Championships

            FREDONIA, NYErie Community College’s Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center is home to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming and Diving Championships for the ninth consecutive year. Nine men’s and women’s teams will contend for the conference titles February 8-11 in the 44th annual men’s and 23rd annual women’s competitions.
            The Oswego women’s team came out on top in 2005 for the first time in school history and will look to defend their title. The Lakers claimed all five relay titles and will return last year’s 1650 freestyle champion Leslie Simrell (Ithaca), 100 Backstroke winner Blair Pecka (Binghamton), 200 Butterfly champion Allyson DaFoe (Homer). Last year’s second place team, the Geneseo Blue Wave, is hoping to recapture the title they held for 15 consecutive years.  New Paltz senior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua) will return for the Hawks after placing first in the 50, 100, and 200 freestyle races last year while teammate Liz Delia (Oswego) also returns to defend her titles in the 200 and 400 IM.

The Geneseo men’s team will look to capture their eighth consecutive SUNYAC title at this year’s meet.  Senior Josh Hinman (Weedsport) will return for the Blue Wave after placing first in the 100 and 200 butterfly races last year while classmate Mike Wiese (Buffalo/Kenmore West) returns to defend his 1650 freestyle crown. Geneseo also returns 200 Breaststroke winner James Kallio (Avon), 100 Backstroke champion Phil Szrama (Orchard Park), 200 Backstroke champion Evan Smith (Pine Bush), and 50 freestyle winner Charlie Hake (Akron) will also return to defend their titles. In addition, Geneseo dominated the relay competition winning all five crowns. Oswego placed second on the men’s side at the 2005 championships. The Lakers return last year’s 500 freestyle champion Jason Cotter (Oswego), 100 breaststroke winner Dominick Mancini (Rochester), and sophomore Kevin Morgan (Saratoga Springs) who claimed the one meter diving title. The Cortland Red Dragons return junior Andrew Chevalier (Chazy/Chazy Central Rural), who will look to defend his titles in the 200 and 400 IM.
            The 2006 SUNYAC Championships start on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at noon with the diving competition and continue Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. each day.
