SWIMMERS AND DIVERS PREPARE FOR SUNYAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Geneseo men’s and women’s teams look to continue their reign

FREDONIA, NY – Polar Bear Club members may have already taken their dip in the icy waters of Lake Erie, but there is one place you’ll find people ready to take the plunge, this time in much warmer waters.

Eric Community College’s Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center in downtown Buffalo is again the site of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming and Diving Championships.  Ten men’s and women’s teams will compete Feb. 12-15 for the conference crowns in the 41st annual men’s and 20th annual women’s competitions.

Geneseo Head Coach Paul Dotterweich will attempt to guide his men’s and women’s teams to victory in defense of last year’s titles.  The women’s team won their 13th consecutive SUNYAC title in 2002 after scoring 867 points, defeating Oswego, the second place team, by 215 points.  The men’s team won their fourth consecutive and ninth SUNYAC championship in the last 13 tries outdistancing Oswego by just 39 points, 821-782.

Joining Geneseo and Oswego are squads from Brockport, Buffalo State, Cortland, New Paltz, Oneonta, Plattsburgh and Potsdam.

This year’s championships also mark the return of Fredonia to the swimming and diving ranks.  After a 13-year absence as a varsity sport, plans to return to the sport coincided with the construction of a new Natatorium on campus.  This year’s squad consists of 22 athletes.

The Championships start on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 12 noon with the diving competition and continue Thursday, Friday and Saturday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. each day.  For more information, go to the SUNYAC web page at www.sunyac.com and click on Swimming & Diving.
