Cortland Captures Three More SUNYAC Titles as Plattsburgh Earns Softball Crown

Cortland Takes Home the Commissioner’s Cup for the Third Consecutive Year

FREDONIA, N.Y. – SUNY Cortland captures women’s lacrosse, men’s lacrosse and baseball SUNYAC Championship titles and takes home the Commissioner’s Cup for the third consecutive year and the ninth time since it began in 1996. The Red Dragons totaled 9.63 overall points. Geneseo came in second with 9.50 points. Brockport was third with 7.63 points.

Saturday afternoon, both Cortland’s men’s and women’s lacrosse teams defeated Geneseo in the SUNYAC finals. The men defeated Oneonta, 8-5, on Wednesday before upsetting the first-seeded Geneseo Knights, 13-7 in the title game. Friday, the women Red Dragon’s came out on top in the semifinal game against Buffalo State, 14-3, and remained undefeated on the season with a 14-8 victory over the Knights in the championship game. This was the eighth consecutive year that the Cortland women won the SUNYAC title and the sixth time that the men won since 1999. Both teams earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Women’s team has been chosen to host a four-team NCAA Division III regional Saturday and Sunday, May 13-14. Cortland (17-0) receives a first-round bye and will face either Colorado College or Endicott on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Men's lacrosse will host either Eastern Connecticut St. or Stevens Tech in an NCAA Division III second round game Saturday, May 13. The Geneseo men’s lacrosse team received an at-large berth into the tournament with a 12-2 overall record and will host either St. Lawrence or Endicott on Saturday, May 13th.

The Cortland baseball team went through the loser’s bracket to beat Brockport twice on Sunday afternoon to win the championship by scores of 8-5 and 4-2. The Red Dragons were upset by Brockport on Friday, 10-4 but came back to beat Plattsburgh, 11-2 to advance to Saturday. Cortland defeated Oneonta 14-3 to set their run for the title on Sunday. This was Cortland’s fourteenth SUNYAC title in 16 years.

The Plattsburgh Cardinals won its first-ever SUNYAC softball Championship on Saturday with a dramatic 4-3 come-from-behind victory over second-seeded Cortland. The Red Dragons jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Plattsburgh pulled to within one in the fourth inning and tied the game in the fifth. The Cardinals got the game winning walk off home run in the tenth inning to earn their 22nd consecutive victory and the SUNYAC’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Plattsburgh (37-7) has earned the number-one seed for the Northeast Regional, hosted by Ithaca College and will face the Union/Western Connecticut winner at 4 p.m. on Thursday May 11, 2006.
