CORTLAND CHOSEN NUMBER ONE IN 2003 SOFTBALL COACHES POLL

FREDONIA, NY – The Cortland Red Dragons narrowly edged out Geneseo in the first-ever softball coaches preseason poll and is the coaches’ choice to win the 2003 SUNYAC Softball regular season title.

Cortland received four first-place votes and return to the field after finishing second last year, losing to Geneseo 3-2 in the SUNYAC Tournament title game.  Geneseo, picked to finish second, completed their most successful season in the program’s history posting a 36-5 record last year and captured their first-ever conference crown and the accompanying NCAA automatic bid.  The Knights were later upset by Ithaca in the NCAA Northeast Regional.  Brockport finished third in the poll with 90 points, after completing the 2002 season 28-13 overall record and a 13-5 conference record.

Potsdam already opened their 2003 season with a ten-game road trip in southern Florida.  Other conference teams also are on the road in the coming weeks on their spring trips before returning home.  Conference play is set to begin Friday, March 28th when Plattsburgh travels to New Paltz for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
