SUNYAC Softball

FREDONIA, NY - The Geneseo Knights won the 2002 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Softball Championship this afternoon after defeating Cortland 3-2. All five runs scored were solo home runs.

Cortland's Jonna Ball (Peekskill/ Hendrick Hudson) led off with a home run in the top of the first inning. Geneseo's Jackie Guba (Latham/Shaker) answered with a solo home run of her own in the bottom of the first. The score remained tied until Geneseo's Jill Almansberger (Fairport/Fairport) hit a home run in the bottom of the third to give the Knights a 2-1 lead. But in the top of the fourth inning, Cortland's Carin Piacente (Putnam Valley/ Walter Panas) answered with the fourth solo home run of the game. In the bottom half of the fourth inning, Geneseo's Courtney Trawitz (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) hit the final home run of the game and scored what would be the game winning run.

Geneseo reached the championship game by defeating Oneonta 7-3 on Friday, and Buffalo State 8-4 and Cortland 5-2 on Saturday. Geneseo finished the conference regular season 19-1 and is currently 34-4 overall.

Earlier today, Cortland eliminated Brockport from the tournament after winning 6-2, and advanced to the finals and a rematch of yesterday's loss to Geneseo. Cortland was victorious over Buffalo State 8-7 on Friday and Plattsburgh 6-4 on Saturday. Cortland finished SUNYAC play 15-5 and is 34-11 overall.

Today's SUNYAC Championship win is Geneseo's first conference title. The Knights will continue post-season play in the Division III NCAA Tournament.
