Oneonta Wins 2001 SUNYAC Softball Championships
Oneonta defeats Cortland to claim SUNYAC crown

FREDONIA, NY – The Oneonta State Red Dragons won the 2001 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Softball Championships this afternoon after defeating Cortland 8-7. Oneonta, the number one seed, was behind 6-1 going into the fifth inning, but came back to defeat and eliminate second seed Cortland from the tournament and claim the SUNYAC crown.

Earlier today, Cortland and Brockport faced off for the second time during the tournament. On Friday Cortland came out on top 5-0 and this afternoon they defeated Brockport 3-0 to eliminate them from the tournament and advance to the finals. Earlier in the week Cortland also defeated Fredonia 8-0. Oneonta reached the finals by defeating Plattsburgh 8-0 on Thursday, and Geneseo 6-5 and Cortland 4-2 on Friday.

Today's SUNYAC Championship win is the second in three years for Oneonta. They will continue post-season play in the Division III NCAA Tournament.

Oneonta to Host 2001 SUNYAC Softball Championships
Oneonta earns top seed in the tournament

FREDONIA, NY – The 2001 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Softball Championships are set to begin Thursday, May 3 and run through Saturday May 5. The winner of the six-team tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

The past four SUNYAC Tournaments have produced four different championship teams including the 2000 champion Buffalo St., this year's top seed Oneonta (18-2, 31-8), second seed Cortland (17-3, 25-15) and third seed Brockport (15-5, 25-11). Also making post-season appearances in the 2001 SUNYAC Championships will be fourth seed Geneseo (13-7, 27-12), fifth seed Fredonia (12-8, 20-13) and sixth seed Plattsburgh (12-8, 20-20).
