SUNYAC OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD
CHAMPIONSHIPS UP FOR GRABS THIS WEEKEND IN CORTLAND

FREDONIA, NY - The 2004 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held this coming Friday and Saturday, April 23-24 on the campus of SUNY Cortland in Cortland, NY.

Teams from Brockport, Buffalo State, Cortland, Fredonia, Geneseo, New Paltz, Oneonta, Oswego and Plattsburgh will compete in this year's 37th annual men's and 21th annual women's competitions.

Geneseo will be defending its men's title after narrowly defeating Cortland in last year's championships 157-151. This will be a tall task as the Red Dragons return five athletes that claimed seven individual titles at the 2003 meet. The Red Dragons had a tremendous indoor season as they took both the SUNYAC and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) crowns. SUNYAC Cross Country and men's indoor 3,000 and 5,000 meter champion Ted Turner (Wappingers Falls/John Jay) is back as the sole returning individual champion for the Knights in the 5,000 and 10,000. The Red Dragons' Jonathan Frechette (Oswego/Oswego), Paul Zalewski (Solvay/Solvay), Tyler Gutierrez (Waverly/Waverly), and Marcus Matyas (Hamburg/Hamburg) all captured titles a year ago.

The Geneseo women's team will attempt to win its second straight championship in 2004. The Knights took the trophy last year by a wide margin 160-111 over second-place Cortland. Kim DePrez (Fairport/Fairport) captured the title in the high jump in 2003 while Mary Kosloski (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) earned the top prize in the triple jump for the Knights. This year, Kerri Gannon (Sparkill/Tappan Zee) is the lone Cortland athlete attempting to defend a 2003 title. Gannon won the 400 meters with a time of 59.34.

The two-day event begins at 2 p.m. on Friday with the men's long jump, men's hammer throw and women's shot put. Friday concludes at 6:30 p.m. with the men's 10,000 meters. Saturday, the action begins at 10:00 a.m. with the men's javelin and concludes at 2:35 p.m. with the men's 4x400 relay.
