Cortland Men and Women Claim SUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field Titles

FREDONIA, NY - The Cortland State Men and Women won the 2001 SUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships yesterday finishing with 148.50 points and 203 points respectively. The men dethroned Fredonia of the SUNYAC crown and also beat out Geneseo to win their second title in five years. Geneseo finished with 102 points for second place and Fredonia who won the last three SUNYAC titles finished in third with 92.50 points.

On the women's side, Cortland claimed their fourth consecutive title and 11th in the 18 years. Geneseo took second place with 94 points and Plattsburgh followed close behind with 87 points for third place.

Both Cortland head coaches Larry Czarnecki, men's coach and Jennifer Potter women's coach, received SUNYAC Coach of the Year honors voted on by fellow conference coaches.

Fredonia to Host 2001 Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Fredonia men and Cortland women will attempt to defend their SUNYAC crowns

FREDONIA, NY – The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) will hold the 34th Annual Men's and 18th Annual Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the SUNY Fredonia campus Saturday, April 28, 2001.

Fredonia is the defending men's champion winning the past three Outdoor Track and Field Championships and amassing a total of 23 SUNYAC titles since 1977. Last year the Blue Devils finished with 160 points. The Plattsburgh Cardinals finished in second place less than 50 points behind Fredonia with 117 total points.

On the women's side, Cortland looks to defend their crown after winning three in a row and 10 total SUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 18 years. The Red Dragons finished with 177 total points in last year's championships followed by Fredonia and Geneseo with 124.5 and 102 points respectively.

Field events will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the running events will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the last running event scheduled to begin at 3:40 p.m.
