2000 Men's SUNYAC Players of the Week
October 23, 2000 Winning the men's Player of the Week honor for a second time this season is Potsdam's Scott Lambert (Watertown, NY/IHC). Lambert, a junior goalkeeper for Potsdam, recorded his sixth shutout of the season this past week after Potsdam's upset win over Plattsburgh 1-0. Scott had 12 saves in the Bear's victory. In SUNYAC play, Lambert has recorded four shutouts, 52 saves, and has held Potsdam's opponents to only eight goals-against. Potsdam ended the regular season with a SUNYAC record of 5-3-1, and just missed making the SUNYAC Conference Championships. October 16, 2000 Winning the men's Player of the Week honor is Geneseo's Mike Merrill (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius). Mike Merrill, a senior mid-fielder, recorded his first career hat-trick in the Knights 4-0 win over Potsdam this past weekend. Merrill also contributed one goal in Geneseo's 2-0 win over Nazareth College. Merrill leads his team in conference scoring with four goals and eight points. Geneseo is 4-3-1 in SUNYAC play and 8-5-1 overall. October 9, 2000 Sharing the men's Player of the Week honors are Geneseo's John Oliveri (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) and Fredonia's Chris Case (Fairport, NY/Fairport). Oliveri, a senior goalkeeper, became Geneseo's career shutout leader with 23, breaking Jim Brunken's record of 21. Oliveri recorded two shutouts this past week in Geneseo's wins over Alfred 7-0, and Union 3-0. In five SUNYAC contests, Oliveri has recorded 14 saves and has allowed four goals-against for a goals-against-average of 0.92. Geneseo is 3-2-1 in SUNYAC and 6-4-1 overall. Senior goalkeeper Chris Case also recorded two shutouts this past week in Fredonia's SUNYAC wins over Potsdam (1-0), and Plattsburgh (2-0). Case made a total of five saves in the two games and has 16 saves in SUNYAC play this season. He has allowed only three goals-against for a goals-against-average of 0.50. Fredonia's win over Plattsburgh on Saturday moved the Blue Devils into first place in the conference with a record of 6-0 (10-1-0 overall). October 2, 2000 Winning the men's Player of the Week honor is Oswego's Derek Popovich (Baldwinsville, NY/Baker High School). Popovich scored six goals in three games last week helping the Lakers to record three wins. The sophomore forward led Oswego to their first SUNYAC victory netting three goals in the Lakers 3-1 win over Geneseo. Popovich also scored a goal in Oswego's 3-1 win over Brockport this past weekend. Popovich leads the team in scoring with eight goals and two assists. Oswego is now 2-2 in SUNYAC play and 5-4 overall.
