Plattsburgh Earns Top Seed In SUNYAC Men’s Soccer Tournament

                                       

            FREDONIA, N.Y. – The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men’s Soccer Tournament is set to kick off on Tuesday, November 4th. New Paltz will travel to Cortland while Fredonia will host Brockport in the opening round. Both games are set to begin at 1:00 p.m. The winners will advance to the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, NY for the semifinals and finals on Friday and Saturday, November 7th and 8th. Plattsburgh and Geneseo, the top two seeds in the tournament, have earned byes into the semis.
            The Plattsburgh State Cardinals earned the top seed with a perfect 9-0 conference record. It is the first time Chris Waterbury’s Cardinals have gone unbeaten and untied in the SUNYAC since 1994. Plattsburgh will oppose the winner of Tuesday’s play-in between Fredonia and Brockport in the semifinals November 7th at 1:30 p.m. Fredonia clinched the fourth seed last Wednesday with a 3-0 win over Buffalo State. Brockport surprised Geneseo with a tie in their season finale to clinch the fifth seed. The Golden Eagles are tied with New Paltz at 4-4-1 in the standings, but Brockport owns the tie-breaker with a 1-0 win over the Hawks earlier in the season. Fredonia and Brockport’s only meeting in the regular season was settled in overtime with the Blue Devils emerging with 2-1 victory.
            Geneseo is the second seed in this year’s tournament after finishing the regular season
7-1-1. The Blue Knights lead the league in goals against average (0.54) and are tied with Fredonia for shutouts against league opposition this season (5). Geneseo will face the winner of Tuesday’s play-in between Cortland and New Paltz also on November 7th at 1:30 in Oneonta.. Cortland, the third seed, ended SUNYAC play with a 6-3 record. In the only meeting between the Red Dragons and Hawks in mid-October, New Paltz used two goals early in the second half to pull out a 2-1 win.
            The championship game between the semifinal winners will be played at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 8th.
