Cortland Men's Soccer Wins In Overtime For Third Straight Crown

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Cortland and Fredonia battled through 101:28 of scoreless play before Red Dragon midfielder Christian Peters (Wesel, Germany/Kourad-Dudeu) found the net on a 20-yard direct kick to give Cortland its third consecutive SUNYAC Championship.

Fredonia, with a strong wind to its back, controlled play in the first half but was unable to capitalize on any of its scoring chances. The Blue Devils had a goal disallowed due to a handball and the Red Dragons managed to clear two balls off the line to keep the game even. In the second half, both teams managed to create a few opportunities but neither could find the goal. In the first overtime period, Cortland's best opportunity came when freshman midfielder Jordan Berg (Jamestown/Jamestown) one-timed a shot in front of the goal that beat Fredonia goalkeeper Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) but trickled wide of the left post. Later in the period, Blue Devil defender CJ Knapp (Pittsford/Pittsford Sutherland) made a run down the right side, beat two Cortland players and served a dangerous ball across the goalmouth that was deflected away by Red Dragon goalkeeper Sean Trask (Alplaus/Niskayuna).

Peters, who earned tournament MVP honors, ended the contest 1:28 into the second overtime with a perfectly placed shot inside the left post to give the Red Dragons the title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
