CORTLAND WINS MEN’S SUNYAC SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP
Red Dragons repeat as conference champs

ONEONTA, NY – Cortland’s Jesse Mankowski (Clarence/Clarence) had a goal and an assist on his way to earning MVP honors as the Red Dragons defeated Brockport 4-2 in the championship game of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men’s soccer tournament at the National Soccer Hall of Fame Fields this afternoon.

Brockport’s Matt Waddington (Grand Island/Grand Island) scored the game’s first goal at 25:29 off a direct kick by Tom McGrath (Long Island/Islip). The score remained 1-0 until Cortland’s Kyle Kilmartin (Johnstown/Johnstown) scored an unassisted goal just 38 seconds into the second half. The Red Dragons went up by one a short time later when Mankowski put a header past Brockport’s Shane Sutton (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) at 54:12. Brockport was forced to play a man down after Anthony Jaworski (Long Island/Newfield) received his second yellow card of the game at 57:20, but Brockport’s equalizer came a short time later when Waddington scored his second goal of the game on a penalty kick after a Cortland foul in the box. Lee Rogers (London, England/Cheam) scored the game-winner at 65:03 off an assist from Kevin Russell (Delmar/Bethlehem). A. Anderson-Winchell (Bloomingburg/Pine Bush) added an insurance goal for Cortland at 72:45 off a cross from Mankowski. Ross Morelli (Rochester/Hilton) made six saves in goal for Cortland.

Brockport falls to 16-4. With the win, Cortland improves to 15-5-1 and receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
