Brockport’s Whitmore and Plattsburgh’s Jones Named

SUNYAC Men’s Basketball Co-Coaches of the Year

FREDONIA, NY — The conference basketball coaches selected Brockport’s Nelson Whitmore and Plattsburgh’s Ed Jones as the 2001-02 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men’s Basketball Co-Coaches of the Year.

In his fourth year as head coach of the Golden Eagles, Whitmore has won back-to-back SUNYAC basketball titles. He previously received the SUNYAC Coach of the Year award in 1999-2000. This season Whitmore led his nationally 9th ranked team to a 14-2 conference record (26-2 overall) and a number one seed at the SUNYAC Tournament.

At the SUNYAC Tournament Brockport defeated Oneonta (100-71) in the first round, Potsdam (82-64) in the semifinals, and Oswego (92-78) in the finals to win the SUNYAC Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Brockport received a bye in the first round, and their first game will be Saturday, March 2 at 7 p.m. against the winner of the Trinity/Colby-Sawyer game.

In Jones’ fifth year with the Cardinals, his team improved from a 10th place finish in the 2000-01 SUNYAC standings to a 2nd place tie in this years standings. Jones led his team to an 11-5 conference record (16-10 overall) and a third seed in this year’s SUNYAC Tournament. Plattsburgh fell to Oswego (79-63) in the quarterfinals.
