2000-2001 Player's of the Week
Febraury 19, 2001 Winning the men's Player of the Week honor for the second time this season is Cortland's Tom Williams (East Northport, NY/Commack). In only three years as a Red Dragon, Williams, the 6'4 senior, finished off the SUNYAC regular season ranked fifth on Cortland's all-time scoring list with 1, 293 points. He shot 22.3 points-per-game and grabbed 8.3 rebounds-per-game last week in Cortland's three SUNYAC wins. He was 10-13 from the foul line (77%), and made 7 of 17 three-point field goals (41%). With last weeks victories over New Paltz (77-56), Brockport (60-58), and Fredonia (77-49) Cortland claimed its third straight regular-season SUNYAC title and earned the first seed in the SUNYAC Tournament. They will face eighth seed Utica/Rome Thursday at 8 p.m. February 12, 2001 Winning the men's Player of the Week honor for the second time this season is Geneseo's Tim Winans (Medina, NY/Medina). The 6'6 junior forward shot 65% from the field in Geneseo's three conference games last week. Winans averaged 16.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per-game, and sunk 71% of his free throws. He had 20 points in the Blue Knight's 86-72 win over Utica/Rome and 16 points and four blocks in their 83-59 win over Oneonta. Winans added 14 points in Geneseo's 70-81 loss to New Paltz. The Blue Knights are currently 11-6 in the conference with three games remaining before the SUNYAC Tournament. February 5, 2001 Sharing the men's Player of the Week honor are Fredonia's Robb Fitchlee (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore West) and Utica/Rome's Will Mensah (Queens, NY). For the second time this season, Fitchlee has won the SUNYAC Player of the Week honor. The 6'7 senior forward helped Fredonia win both SUNYAC games last week including a 68-66 over-time victory against Oneonta. Fitchlee had two double-double performances scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds against Oneonta, and scoring 23 points and 11 rebounds in the Blue Devils 71-60 win over New Paltz. Fitchlee also averaged 3.0 assists, 3.0 steals, and 4.0 blocks per-contest last week. Fredonia continues to improve their SUNYAC standings and are currently 8-6 in the conference. Mensah, a 6'2 junior guard, scored 30 points and went 8 for 11 from three-point range to lead the Wildcats to a 69-64 win over Brockport on Friday. Mensah scored 8 points in 2 minutes late in the game to put Utica/Rome over the top. He has 59 three-pointers on the season and currently averages 20.8 points-per-game. Utica/Rome is 6-9 in the SUNYAC and is fighting for a trip to the conference tournament later this month. January 29, 2001 Winning the men's Player of the Week honor is Potsdam's Andre Peterson (Monticello, NY/Monticello). Forward/guard Andre Peterson averaged 17.6 points and 8.3 rebounds per game through three SUNYAC contests and helped the Bears post wins over Cortland (81-61) and Utica/Rome (71-59) last week. Peterson scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds in Tuesday night's 70-77 loss to Oswego. On Friday night, the 6'3 junior hit 10 of 12 shots from the field for a total of 28 points in the defeat over Cortland State. Peterson went on to score 12 points and grab 12 rebounds on Saturday in the Bear's win over Utica/Rome. Peterson currently leads his team in scoring with 297 points (18.6 points-per-game) and in rebounds with 151 (9.4 points-per-game). Potsdam is currently 6-7 in SUNYAC and 8-8 overall. January 22, 2001 Winning the men's Player of the Week honor is Fredonia's Robb Fitchlee (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore West). Fitchlee averaged 14 points per-contest as well as 16 rebounds, three steals, and five blocks per- game for the Blue Devils who went 2-0 last week in SUNYAC play. The 6'7 senior grabbed 14 rebounds, dished out seven assists, and had four steals and blocks in Fredonia's 71-64 win over Brockport. Fitchlee gave his best performance of the week in Fredonia's 80-59 win over Utica/Rome on Saturday. He racked up 20 points, grabbed 18 rebounds, and blocked six shots. Fitchlee is averaging 15.8 points-per-game, and leads the SUNYAC in rebounds (10.3 RPG). Fredonia is 5-5 in SUNYAC play and 7-6 overall. January 15, 2001 Sharing the men's Player of the Week honors are Cortland's Tom Williams (East Northport, NY/Commack) and Tim Winans (Medina, NY/Medina) of Geneseo. Williams, a 6'4" senior guard, reached the 1,000-career pint mark last week with a 20-point effort in Cortland's 70-60 win over Buffalo State. Williams went on to match his season-high 27 points against Alfred in Thursday's 75-60 win and added an additional 23 points in Cortland's upset loss 60-62 to New Paltz. He currently has 1, 058 points, averaging 18.4 points-per-game. Cortland is ranked 17th in Division III and had won nine straight before losing at New Paltz last Saturday. Winans, a 6'6" junior forward, was named MVP of the Chase Scholarship Tournament after scoring a career-high 23 points and grabbing eight rebounds in Geneseo's championship win over Rochester 65-61. Winans averaged 17 points and 5.7 rebounds per-game. He shot an impressive 76% from the floor making 19 of 25 attempts. Geneseo defeated Keuka College 90-78, and Brockport 68-60 to reach the finals of the annual tournament. Geneseo currently leads the conference with a record of 7-1. January 8, 2001 Winning the men's Player of the Week is Potsdam's Jason Lang (New York, NY/LaSalle Academy). Lang, a senior guard for the Bears, scored his 1,000-career point in last weeks 91-83 win over Oneonta. Lang went four-for-four from three-point land against Oneonta, scoring 25 total-points, and contributing five assists. He followed up Friday's performance with 16 points, five rebounds and five assists in Potsdam's win over New Paltz 72-59. Lang has 136 points on the season, averaging 17.0 points-per-game. December 11, 2000 Winning the men's Player of the Week honors is Keith Glenn (Queens, NY/Beach Channel) of Utica/Rome. The 6'6 senior forward has performed five double-double games in Utica/Rome's first six contests of the season. This past week he amassed 57 points and 28 rebounds in the Wildcat's win over Utica College 73-55 and loss against Cortland 84-64. Glenn currently leads the conference in scoring with 133 points in six games (22.2 points-per-game). He has also hauled in 63 rebounds (10.5 per-game) to rank first on his team and second in the conference. December 4, 2000 Winning the men's Player of the Week honors is Mike Medbury (Darien, NY/Attica). Medbury, a 6'5 sophomore forward, averaged 17 points per contest and went 13 for 16 from three-point range. He scored a career-high against Oneonta netting 23 points. Brockport is 3-0 on the season after last week's defeats over Buffalo St. 95-78, New Paltz 103-78, and Oneonta 87-75.
