FREDONIA, NY After a vote of the conference basketball coaches, Cortland's Tom Spanbauer was voted the 2000-01 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Basketball Coach of the Year.
In his sixth year as head coach of the Red Dragons, Spanbauer has received the SUNYAC Coach of the Year award three times. This season Spanbauer led his team to a 16-4 conference record (21-6 overall) and a number one seed to the SUNYAC Tournament.
At the SUNYAC Tournament Cortland won their first two contests against Utica/Rome (63-55) and Fredonia (60-49) before being defeated by third seed Brockport 69-63 in the finals. Although Cortland did not receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament, they will play in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships as the number one seed. The Red Dragons will host RPI in the first round Wednesday, February 28th.
