Mychal Wilkes (Newark/Newark), Brockport senior guard
Wilkes was named the SUNYAC Men's Basketball Tournament MVP
this weekend at Oswego, as the Brockport Men's Basketball
team took home the championship as the number 8 seed, upsetting
the number one, number three, and number five seeds along
the way. Wilkes had game highs 21 and 27 points in the semifinal
and final games, respectively. Wilkes also led the team in
rebounds during the semifinal game with eight. Brockport will
face Carnegie-Mellon Friday night at 6 p.m. at John Carroll
University in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
February 23
Mychal Wilkes (Newark/Newark), Brockport senior guard
Wilkes averaged 21.6 points in week that saw the Golden Eagles
go 3-0 and earn the eighth and final SUNYAC playoff spot.
He shot 52.4 percent (22-for-42) from the field, and 45.2
percent (14-for-31) from three-point range. He scored 26 points
in an 84-76 win over Morrisville, register 19 points and seven
assist in a 71-53 triumph over Cortland, and helped his team
secure their playoff position with 20 points, six rebounds
and three assists in an 86-81 victory over league leader Geneseo,
shooting 6-for-12 from the field, 3-for-8 from three-point
range, and 5-for-7 from the line.
Brad Cooper (Monticello/Monticello), Fredonia
junior guard
Cooper averaged 23 points in a 3-0 week for the Blue Devils,
shooting 58.8 percent (24-for-43) from the field, and 75 percent
(9-for-12) from three-point range. After opening the week
scoring 19 and 18 points, respectively, in wins over Buffalo
State (82-62) and Geneseo (64-59), he scored a career-high
32 points, shooting 10-for-17 from the field, 4-for-5 from
three-point range and 8-for-12 from the line in a 71-68 win
over Cortland.
February 16
Antonio Speed (Buffalo/East), Buffalo State sophomore forward
Speed averaged a double-double -- 17.7 points and 11.3
rebounds -- in three SUNYAC wins last week. His 26-point,
16-rebound effort in the 74-65 win over Brockport represented
career highs in both statistical categories. He followed that
with 11 points and 12 rebounds in a 76-66 victory over Cortland,
and 16 points and six rebounds in an 80-65 win over New Paltz.
Speed shot 54.5 percent from the field in the three games
(18 of 33), including 4 of 6 from three-point range. He was
also 13 of 18 from the foul line (72.2 percent).
February 9
Kyle Reuter (Mexico/Mexico), Oswego senior guard
Senior guard Kyle Reuter averaged 21.9 points, shot 36 percent
(9-for-22) from three-point range, and connected on 18 of
22 free throws (81.8 percent) in a 2-1 week for the Lakers.
After scoring 14 points in a 69-68 non-conference loss at
Utica College, Reuter averaged 25 points in SUNYAC weekend
wins over SUNY Cortland and The College at Brockport, which
moved team into a tie for first place in the conference standings
with Oneonta State with a 9-3 mark. Reuter tallied 29 points
on 9-for-17 shooting from the floor (4-for-8 beyond the arc)
and making all seven free throws in an 84-76 win over the
Red Dragons, and led all scorers the following night with
21 points in a 78-75 triumph over Brockport, scoring 15 points
and going 10-for-10 from the line in the second half. He moved
into sixth place on Oswego's all-time scoring list with 1,317
points.
February 2
Scott Morton (Syracuse/Westhill), Geneseo senior guard
Morton averaged 28 points and 9 rebounds in SUNYAC wins over
New Paltz (70-60) and Oneonta (79-77). He shot 56.3 percent
from the field (18 of 32), including 8 of 14 on three-pointers
(57.1 percent). He also averaged 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals.
It was the fourth time this season he has received SUNYAC's
weekly honor and in the process has moved into fourth all-time
in Geneseo career scoring with 1,379 points. Last week, he
passed former All-Americans Joe Zera (1,339 points) and Ed
Robota (1,356).
January 26
Ryan Morin (Altamont/Guilderland), Oneonta senior forward
Morin averaged 20 points and 8.5 rebounds in a pair of SUNYAC
wins -- 78-45 over Morrisville State, and 78-65 over Potsdam.
He shot 74 percent from the field (17 of 23) and 83 percent
from the line (5 of 6). He also averaged 2.0 assists, 1.5
steals, and 1.5 blocked shots in the two games. By winning
twice, the Red Dragons stayed atop the SUNYAC standings. They
entered the new week with a 7-1 league record (12-5 overall)
and a one-game lead in the conference standings.
January 19
Damon Brown (Brooklyn/Port Richmond), Potsdam senior guard
Brown averaged 25.7 points per game over a 1-2 week for Potsdam.
Brown also made thirteen out of twenty attempted three point
shots, going 65% from behind the arc.
January 12
Scott Morton (Syracuse/Westhill), Geneseo senior guard
Over a week that saw Geneseo go 2-1, Morton averaged 21.3
points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.7 blocks.
He moved to ninth all time in scoring at Geneseo with 1,224
points to date.
January 5
Jamar Gray (Rochester/Bishop-Kearney), Buffalo State senior
guard
Gray helped lead Buffalo State to its first win of the
season over Heidelberg. On his way to being named to the All-Tournament
team, Gray averaged 21 points, 4.5 rebounds, one assist, two
steals and five blocks over two games.
December 15
Tommy Downing (Staten Island/Curtis), Oswego senior guard/forward
In a 104-94 loss to Nazareth, Downing played all forty
minutes, scoring 30 points. He also grabbed six rebounds,
seven assists, three steals and a block. Downing went 11/20
from the field, 3/8 from the arc, and 5/8 at the free throw
line.
December 8
Scott Morton (Syracuse/Westhill), Geneseo senior guard
Morton averaged 23 points, eight rebounds, three assists,
1.3 steals, and .3 blocks over three games in the last week.
His game-winning shot at the buzzer over Oswego garnered nation
coverage on ESPN and Yahoo.
Chris Ruiz (Bronx/St. Agnes), Plattsburgh
sophomore guard
Ruiz scored a SUNYAC-high, career-high, and possible school
record 41 points in an overtime win against Brockport. Ruiz
also scored 39 points in a loss against St. Lawrence. Over
three games last week, he averaged 26.3 points, 5.7 rebounds,
3 assists, 2.3 steals, and .33 blocks.
December 1
Chris Ruiz (Bronx/St. Agnes), Plattsburgh sophomore guard
In a close 59-58 loss to Clarkson, Ruiz scored 25 points,
shooting 76.9% from the field. He also grabbed four rebounds,
two assists and one block. Ruiz went four for five from the
free throw line.
November 24
Kyle Reuter (Mexico/Mexico), Oswego senior guard
Reuter averaged 22 ppg over the weekend in the SUNY Old Westbury
Panther Classic on his way to being named the tournament MVP.
He also surpassed 1000 career points, only the thirteenth
player in school history to do so. He shot 52% from the field
and the three point line, while shooting 75% from the free
throw line. Oswego is undefeated this season (4-0).
