SUNYAC Announces Men’s and Women’s Basketball Coaches of the Year

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced that Cortland’s Jeannette Yeoman and Tom Spanbauer were selected as the 2006 SUNYAC Men and Women’s Basketball Coaches of the Year. Yeoman earns the women’s coaching honor for the third time (00, 04) while Spanbauer receives the men’s award for the fourth time (1997, 1999, 2001).

This season, Yeoman led Cortland to a 23-4 record, a 15-1 SUNYAC record and an at large berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament. This past weekend in the SUNYAC tournament, Cortland defeated Geneseo in overtime 61-53 in the semifinals before falling to Oswego in the title game 61-56.  Yeoman currently has an impressive record of 180-44 (.804) in her eighth season with the Red Dragons. This marks the fifth time Yeoman has led Cortland to an NCAA playoff. The Red Dragons will travel to Rochester on Friday to take on the Yellowjackets in the NCAA Tournament First Round game.

Spanbauer, now in his 11th season at Cortland, led the Red Dragons to the SUNYAC regular season title with a 14-2 conference record. Cortland is 23-4 on the season and has received an NCAA Division III tournament at-large berth. This is the Red Dragons fourth NCAA appearance and first since 2000. The Red Dragons will host U.Mass-Boston on Friday March 3 in the opening round. Spanbauer’s current record with Cortland stands at 190-114 (.625).
