SUNYAC BASKETBALL HEADS TO UTICA

Teams set for men’s and women’s Final Four

 

FREDONIA, NY – The stage is set for the 2003 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships.  Four men’s and four women’s teams earned their place at this year’s Final Four with victories last night in the first round of the tournament held on campuses.

            Brockport, Buffalo State, New Paltz and Oswego advance to Friday’s men’s semifinal games at the Utica Memorial Auditorium in Utica, NY.  The fifth-seeded Brockport Golden Eagles, winners of the last two SUNYAC titles, eliminated fourth-seeded SUNYIT 82-65 and will now face New Paltz on Friday evening at 8:00 p.m.  New Paltz, seeded eighth in this year’s tournament, upset top-seeded Potsdam 59-53.  Oswego earned their trip to Utica by defeating Oneonta 90-72.  The second-seeded Lakers will now face third-seeded Buffalo State, who eliminated No. 6 Fredonia 81-64.  The Oswego-Buffalo State game is set for Friday at 6:00 p.m.

            On the women’s side, Brockport, Buffalo State, Cortland and Fredonia all claimed victories and secured their spots in this year’s semifinal round of the women’s tournament.  Third-seeded Brockport defeated No. 6 Oneonta 70-66 and will now face Buffalo State on Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.  Buffalo State, the second seed and defending SUNYAC champion, eliminated seventh-seeded Oswego 63-48.  The other women’s semifinal game will feature fourth-seeded Cortland, who defeated No. 5 Plattsburgh 77-65, and Fredonia, seeded eighth in this year’s tournament.  Fredonia shocked top-seeded Geneseo 66-65.  Cortland and Fredonia square off Friday at 3:00 p.m.

            Winners of the men’s and women’s semifinal games will meet Saturday, March 1 in the finals.  The women’s final is set for 1:00 p.m. with the men’s game to follow at 4:00 p.m.
