Brockport’s Medbury, Cortland’s Rother and Potsdam’s Clayton receive individual honors

FREDONIA, NYThe State University of New York Athletic Conference announced its 2003 Men’s Basketball All-Conference teams, as well as Player of the Year and First Year Player of the Year, tonight at the annual SUNYAC Basketball Championship dinner at the Holiday Inn in Utica, NY.

Brockport’s Mike Medbury (Attica/Attica) wins Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive year.  The senior forward finished the regular season first in the league in scoring averaging 19.3 points per game, as well as fourth in field goal percentage (.538) and free throw percentage (.805).  He also grabbed 6.5 rebounds per game for the Golden Eagles who earned the fifth seed in this year’s SUNYAC tournament and will face eighth-seeded New Paltz in the semifinals on Friday.  Medbury is a two-time SUNYAC Player of the Week and also earned an ECAC Player of the Week honor this season.

Cortland’s Jon Rother (Sodus Point/Sodus Central) and Potsdam’s Junior Clayton (Albany/Albany Academy) were named this year’s co-First Year Players of the Year.  Rother, a 6’6’’ forward, led the Red Dragons in scoring and was ninth in the conference with 14.5 points per game.  He also finished the season averaging 5.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.  Clayton, a sophomore transfer student, has made an immediate impact to the program as he finished the regular season ranked second on the Bears scoring list averaging 12.3 points per game.  His contributions have helped Potsdam to a 12-4 conference record and earned them a No. 1 seed in this year’s tournament.
