SUNYAC INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS SET FOR SATURDAY
Fredonia
to host this year’s championships in Geneva

FREDONIA, NY - The 2004 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men and Women's Indoor Track Championships will be held Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Bristol Field House at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY. Teams from Brockport, Buffalo State, Cortland, Fredonia, Geneseo, New Paltz, Oneonta, Oswego and Plattsburgh will compete in this year's 24th annual men's and 21st annual women's competitions.

Geneseo is looking for its fourth consecutive men's title at this year's championships. In 2003, the Knights won eight events finishing the meet with 160.5 points. Ted Turner (Wappingers Falls/John Jay) returns to defend his title in the 5,000 meters after capturing the SUNYAC Cross Country Championship this past fall. Knight seniors Matt Young (Geneseo/Geneseo) and B.J. Dunham (Rochester/Gates-Chili) will also look for back-to-back crowns. At the 2003 meet, Young won the championship in the 1,000 meters and Dunham sprinted to the 55-meter title. Cortland will look to up their place in the standings after finishing second to the Knights the last three years. Senior standout Jon Frechette (Oswego/Oswego) will lead the Red Dragons after capturing last year's 55-meter hurdle title. Already this season, Frechette has qualified for the ECAC Championships and been named ECAC Track Athlete of the Week.

The Geneseo women captured the team title in 2003. The Knights finished the meet with 203 points, 25 ahead of second-place Cortland. The Red Dragons had won the previous six team championships. Senior Joanna Zieno (Fairport/Fairport) and sophomores Marta Scott (South Wales/East Aurora) and Kim DePrez (Fairport/Fairport) return for the Knights to defend their respective titles. Zieno won both the 1,000 and 1,500 meter events while Scott took the 800-meter crown and DePrez won the high jump. Cortland senior Kerri Gannon (Sparkill/Tappan Zee) and sophomores Amanda Failing (Pearl River/Pearl River) and Andrea Gentile (Middletown/Minisink Valley) all won events a year ago for the Red Dragons.

The all-day event begins at 9 a.m. with the women's weight throw and concludes with the men's 3,200 meter relay at 5:00pm. For more information, including up-to-date performance lists, visit the indoor track and field page on the SUNYAC website at www.sunyac.com/indoortrack.
