SEVEN SUNYAC ATHLETES EARN ALL-AMERICA HONORS
WHITEWATER, WI – Seven SUNYAC Indoor Track and
Field athletes received All-American recognition at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Track
and Field Championships this past weekend in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Oneonta's
Rose Velan (Stamford/Chazy), Kelly Stevens (Rochester/Churchville-Chili),
Ashlee Robertson (Mechanicville/Shenendehowa), and Jen Macri (Selkirk/Bethlehem),
Cortland's Jon Frechette (Oswego/Oswego) and Andrea Gentile (Middletown/Minisink
Valley) and Geneseo's Marta Scott (South Wales/East Aurora) were
all honored in their respective events.
The Red Dragon foursome of Velan, Stevens, Robertson and Macri placed eighth
in the distance medley relay to earn All-American status for that event with
a time of 12:10.67. Robertson and Stevens also earned All-American honors
in individual events. Robertson ran a 57.79 in the finals of the 400-meter
dash, good enough for sixth in the nation, and Stevens placed sixth in the
800-meter run with a time of 2:16.11. Frechette and Gentile both earned All-American
honors with eighth-place finishes in the 55-meter hurdles. Frechette sprinted
to the finish line in 7.75 seconds in the men's race while Gentile finished
in 8.47 seconds on the women's side. Scott finished 4th in her heat and was
seeded eighth in the preliminaries with a 4:40.33 in the women's 1500 meters.
The sophomore placed seventh in the finals with a time of 4:42.90 to gain
the national recognition.
