Plattsburgh Wins SUNYAC Ice Hockey Championship

Cardinals win sixth consecutive SUNYAC title

FREDONIA, NYThe Plattsburgh Cardinals defeated the Oswego Lakers on Sunday 2-1, to capture their sixth consecutive SUNYAC Ice Hockey Championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Cardinals tied Oswego on Friday 2-2 in overtime.  As a result of the tie, the winner of Saturday’s game was supposed to determine the SUNYAC champion.  However, both teams battled it out on Saturday night to another tie, 3-3 in overtime, taking the finals to a third game.

Plattsburgh finished the regular season with a 13-1-0 conference record with their only loss dealt to them by Oswego, 3-2, earlier in the season.  First seed Plattsburgh received a bye in the play-in round of the tournament and defeated fourth seed Geneseo in the first game of the semifinals 7-1.  They lost to Geneseo in the second game 2-1, but won the mini-game 3-0 to advance to the finals against Oswego.

Second seed Oswego ended the SUNYAC season with an 10-3-1 record. They earned their shot at the SUNYAC title by defeating third seed Cortland in the second game of the semifinals, 5-4 in overtime.  Oswego and Cortland tied the first game 1-1 in overtime.
