13, 2006 SUNY Fredonia senior Tom Briggs (Fruitport, MI) put together
a five-point weekend and scored the game-winning goal in overtime to defeat SUNY
Plattsburgh Saturday and has been named the State University of New York Athletic
Conference (SUNYAC) Hockey Player of the Week for the week ending February 12.
Joining Briggs with weekly honors are SUNY Cortland freshman Nick Catanzaro (Buffalo,
NY) and SUNY Geneseo goalie Derek Jokic (Petersburg, ONT) with the rookie and
goalie of the week awards respectively. Briggs scored two goals and added an
assist in Fredonia's 8-4 victory over Potsdam on Friday night. His two goals came
in the first 6:20 of the game as the Blue Devils built an early lead. The following
night, in his final regular season home game, he netted a goal and an assist with
his goal coming 26 seconds into overtime as Fredonia defeated Plattsburgh, 4-3.
His five points over the weekend doubled his season points total. He now has seven
goals and three assists on the season. Catanzaro picked up his first career
hat trick with a three-goal outburst against SUNY Brockport on Friday night. He
added an assist against Geneseo the following night. The five-point weekend pushed
him into second place on the team in goals and points for the Red Dragons.
Jokic helped Geneseo to a weekend sweep of Oswego and Cortland. His 34 saves helped
the Knights to a 3-1 win over Oswego and he also made 19 saves in the victory
over Cortland on Saturday. The wins clinched second place for Geneseo in the SUNYAC
standings and earned the team a bye in the first round of SUNYAC Tournament play.
February
6, 2006 Buffalo State senior forward Sean Burke (Barrie, ONT) scored a
hat trick and added two assists in a 7-0 win over Geneseo as the Bengals clinched
a playoff berth for just the second time in school history and has been named
the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Hockey Player of
the Week for the week ending February 5. Joining Burke with weekly honors are
teammate Sean Sheehan (Mt. Laurel, NJ) and SUNY Oswego freshman Ryan Ellis (Georgetown,
ONT) with the goalie and rookie of the week awards respectively. Burke had
an 8-point weekend as Buffalo State not only beat Geneseo 7-0 but also topped
SUNY Brockport 4-3 in overtime to complete the weekend sweep. Burke scored three
times and had two assists in the win over Geneseo and then scored twice and assisted
on another goal in the win over the Golden Eagles. Sheehan handled to goaltending
for the Bengals in the weekend sweep. He stopped 43 shots and earned the shutout
against Geneseo and stopped 30 shots in the overtime win at Brockport. The shutout
was his second of the season, a mark that sets a new school record at Buffalo
State. Ellis wins the award for the second consecutive week as he scored three
goals and added two assists in a weekend sweep of Plattsburgh and Potsdam. Against
Plattsburgh, he scored a goal 35 seconds into the second period and assisted on
a game tying goal at the end of the period and assisted on the go-ahead goal early
in the third. He added two goals in a 9-3 win over Potsdam on Saturday.
January
30, 2006 SUNY Fredonia junior forward Matt Zeman (Rocky River, OH) scored
a game-winning goal and a game-tying goal as two of his three goals over the weekend
for the Blue Devils and has been named the State University of New York Athletic
Conference (SUNYAC) Hockey Player of the Week for the week ending January 29.
Joining Zeman with weekly honors are SUNY Potsdam goalie Vince Cuccaro (Ottawa,
ONT) and SUNY Oswego freshman Ryan Ellis (Georgetown, ONT) with the goalie and
rookie of the week awards, respectively. Zeman led the Blue Devils to a three-point
weekend with the game-winning goal in a 4-2 victory over Cortland on Friday night
and then netted two goals, including the game-tying goal, in a 5-5 tie with Oswego.
He also added an assist for a three-point game against the Lakers. His goal against
the Red Dragons was his 100th career point and he now has 103 points in 70 career
games. Cuccaro led the Bears to a weekend sweep with 24 saves in a 6-5 win
over Geneseo and 27 stops in a 3-2 overtime victory over Brockport. After allowing
three goals in the first period against Geneseo, Cuccaro held his ground and stopped
17 of the final 19 shots over the final two periods. Against Brockport, the only
two goals allowed in the game came in the first period and he stopped the final
20 shots of the game. Ellis, the high-scoring rookie from Oswego, scored an
unassisted goal at the end of the first period to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead over
Buffalo State and then assisted on the game-winner early in the third period.
On Saturday, he broke out for a hat-trick in a 5-5 tie with Fredonia. He scored
once in each period for his 15th, 16th and 17th goals of the season. His 37 points
(16 goals, 21 assists) is tied for second in the country.
January
23, 2006 SUNY Cortland senior goaltender Matt Meacham (Massena, NY) led
the Red Dragons to their first win over SUNY Oswego since 1996-97 and has been
named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Hockey Player
of the Week for the week ending January 22. There were no nomiations for the rookie
or goalie of the week awards. Meacham finished with 39 saves in the 5-4 victory
form Cortland over Oswego and also posted a 55-save effort in a 1-1 tie with Utica.
For the week he posted a .949 save percentage and a 2.40 goals against average
in two games. The 55 saves against Utica tied his career high.
January
16, 2006 SUNY Brockport junior forward A.J. Maio (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili
HS) scored three goals and two assists in three games for the Golden Eagles and
has been named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Hockey
Player of the Week for the week ending January 15. Joining Maio with weekly honors
are SUNY Oswego goalie Ryan Scott (Williamsville, NY) and SUNY Plattsburgh freshman
Mike Thomson (LaHabra Heights, CA) with the goalie and rookie of the week awards
respectively. Maio led the Golden Eagles with two goals and an assist in a
5-4 victory over Suffolk University on the road Saturday and then scored a goal
and added an assist in a 3-2 loss to Nichols College the following night. Scott
was between the pipes as the Lakers went on the road and defeated Division I RIT
on Saturday. He stopped 30 shots and allowed just two goals in a 4-2 SUNY Oswego
win. Thomson is the SUNYAC Rookie of the Week after leading SUNY Plattsburgh
with three goals last week. He gave the Cardinals an early lead against Babson
with a goal and scored the first two Plattsburgh goals in a 5-2 victory over Plymouth
State.
January 9, 2006 Oswego junior forward
Ryan Woodward (Picton, ONT) scored twice including the game-winner as the Lakers
defeated Hobart, ranked No. 7 in the country, and has been named the State University
of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Hockey Player of the Week for the week
ending January 8. Joining Woodward with weekly honors are SUNY Geneseo goalie
Derek Jokic (Petersburg, ONT) and SUNY Brockport freshman BJ Quinto (King City,
ONT) with the goalie and rookie of the week awards respectively. Woodward remained
the nation's scoring leader with his two goals in the win over Hobart. He gave
the Lakers a 3-0 lead with his first goal with just four minutes gone in the game
as Oswego jumped out to an early lead. Hobart scored early in the third period
before Woodward extended the Laker lead to 4-1 with his second of the game at
the 13:21 mark of the third. Jokic wins the Goalie of the Week award as he
led the Ice Knights to a 2-1 overtime victory over Curry on Sunday afternoon.
He stopped 38 shots, including 15 in the first period when Geneseo was outshot
15-7 and held a 1-0 lead. Jokic improved to 7-2-2 on the season with 13 saves
in the second period and 10 more in the third. Quinto was involved in all three
goals as the Golden Eagles blanked Lebanon Valley on Sunday. He scored goals in
the first and second periods and then assisted on an insurance goal in the third
to seal the victory. He had just one goal in the first 14 games of the season
as Brockport improved to 3-11-1 with the win.

12, 2005 SUNY Geneseo junior Brett Bestwick (Nanaimo, BC) scored three
goals in a 5-5 tie with SUNY Potsdam Saturday and has been named the State University
of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Hockey Player of the Week for the week
ending December 11. Joining Bestwick with weekly honors are Buffalo State teammates
Sean Sheenan (Mt. Laurel, NJ) and freshman Jason Hill (Niagara Falls, NY) with
the goalie and rookie of the week awards respectively. Bestwick scored three
times, including twice in the third period to give the Ice Knights a 5-3 lead
against Potsdam. In the third period he scored on a powerplay goal at the 10:31
mark and then added a shorthanded tally with three minutes left in the period
to give Geneseo a two-goal lead. Sheehan wins the Goalie of the Week award
for the second straight week as he helped the Bengals to a weekend split with
Lebanon Valley. He recorded his first career shutout with a 50-save performace
in a 3-0 win on Friday and then stopped 20 more shots in a 4-1 loss the following
night. He had a .946 save percentage for the weekend and a 2.00 goals against
average. Hill scored his first career goal and added an assist in the 3-0
win over Lebanon Valley and then scored his second career goal the following night
in the 4-1 loss. December 5, 2005 Buffalo
State senior forward Sean Burke (Barre, ONT) scored two goals and had one assist
in an overtime victory over SUNY Potsdam and has been named the State University
of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Hockey Player of the Week for the week
ending December 4. Joining Burke with weekly honors are teammate Sean Sheenan
(Mt. Laurel, NJ) and SUNY Brockport freshman Aaron Boyer (Calgary, ALB) with the
goalie and rookie of the week awards respectively. Burke scored the game-winning
goal against the Bears with 0.3 seconds remaining in overtime to complete the
North Country sweep with wins over Plattsburgh and Potsdam on consecutive days.
He has 12 goals and four assists so far this season. Sheehan stopped 26 shots
in the 2-1 win over Plattsburgh and then turned away 34 shots in the overtime
victory over Potsdam. The win over Plattsburgh State was the first in Buffalo
State history. He made 10 saves in the first period when the Bengals were outshot
10-5 but came out of the period with a 1-0 lead. Boyer led the Golden Eagles
to a 6-3 win on the road at Cortland Friday night with a pair of goals including
the game-winner. He then scored against Oswego to give Brockport a 2-1 lead in
the second period before the Golden Eagles dropped the 5-2 decision.
November 28, 2005 SUNY Brockport sophomore Gordon Pritchard
(Yorkton, SASK) scored two goals and had two assists to lead the Golden Eagles
to their first victory of the season and is the State University of New York Athletic
Conference (SUNYAC) Hockey Player of the Week for the week ending November 27.
Joining Pritchard with weekly honors are teammate Aaron Boyer (Calgary, ALB) and
SUNY Plattsburgh senior goalie Craig Neilson (Markham, ONT) with the rookie and
goalie of the week awards respectively. Pritchard was named to the All-Tournament
Team at the Stovepipe/PAL Cup Tournament at St. Anslem College over the weekend
as he led Brockport past Southern New Hampshire in the opening round, 7-5, and
helped the Golden Eagles to a 3-3 tie with Plymouth State in the Championship
contest. Pritchard added an assist against Plymouth State to go along with his
four points against Southern New Hampshire. Boyer scored his first career
goal in the tie with Plymouth State and added an assist in the victory over Southern
New Hampshire. Neilson led the Cardinals to the championship game of the PrimeLink
Shootout with a 22-save performance in a 5-1 win over Potsdam. He then turned
away another 22 shots in a 3-2 loss to Middlebury in the Championship game. He
was the All-Tournament goalie selection. November
21, 2005 The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC)
has announced its men's ice hockey players of the week ending November 20. SUNY
Oswego sophomore C.J. Thompson (Picton, ONT/Wellington Dukes) scored five goals
and four assists in three games last week and is the SUNYAC Hockey Player of the
Week. Joining Thompson with weekly honors are SUNY Brockport first year forward
Blake Reilly (Newport Beach, CA/South Surrey Eagles) and Geneseo's sophomore goalie
Derek Jokic (Petersburg, ONT/Kitchener Dutchmen) with the rookie and goalie of
the week awards respectively. Thompson recorded a pair of assists in a 7-1
win over Cortland and then scored twice in a 4-3 victory over Wentworth and added
his first career hat trick in a 7-4 win over Curry in a busy week for the Lakers.
Reilly scored his first and second career goals for SUNY Brockport in a 5-2 loss
to Geneseo Friday night. He scored in the second period to make it a 2-1 game
and then scored in the third period to help the Golden Eagles get close again
at 4-2. Jokic made 27 saves in the 5-2 win over SUNY Brockport. The victory
ran his record to 4-1-1 and has a 3.03 goals against average. November
14, 2005 SUNY Oswego freshman Ryan Ellis (Georgetown, ONT) had a fantastic
weekend and therefore earns both the State University of New York Athletic Conference
(SUNYAC) Player of the Week as well as the conference Rookie of the Week awards.
He is joined by Fredonia senior Rick Cazares (San Jose, CA), who wins the Goalie
of the Week award for the week ending November 13. Ellis scored a hat trick
in a 4-2 victory over Plattsburgh State on Friday night and then added four goals
and one assist in the Laker's 7-4 victory over Potsdam the following day. For
the season, he now has seven goals and seven assists. Cazares won both games
for the Blue Devils over the weekend allowing jusyt a single goal in each victory.
He made 21 saves in a 4-1 victory over SUNY Brockport Friday and then stopped
33 shots in a 6-1 Fredonia win over SUNY Geneseo. November
7, 2005 Plattsburgh State senior David Friel (Mississauga, ONT) has been
selected as the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Hockey
Player of the Week for the week ending November 6. Joining Friel with weekly honors
are Oswego teamates Peter Magagna (Orangeville, ONT) and sophomore goalie Ryan
Scott (Williamsville, NY) with the rookie and goalie of the week awards respectively.
Friel scored the game-winning goal in a 6-3 victory over SUNY Brockport with one
of his two goals and then added two assists in a 7-1 win at Geneseo. He scored
four goals in SUNYAC games last year and already has the same number of goals
in conference games this season. Magagna scored a hat trick in a 6-2 victory
over Fredonia on Friday and then tallied a goal and an assist in a 10-1 win over
Buffalo State. Scott picked up victories in both weekend games with 22 saves
against Buffalo State and 27 against Fredonia. He allowed just three goals in
the two games. October 31, 2005 SUNY Geneseo
junior forward Mike MacDonald (New Glasgow, NS/The Kent School) has been selected
as the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Hockey Player
of the Week for the week ending October 30. Joining MacDonald with weekly honors
is Cortland freshman forward, Patrick Baumann (Centerreach, NY/New York Apple
Core), who picked up the conference rookie of the week honors. There was no goalie
of the week awarded. MacDonald scored a goal in each game of a weekend series
at Neumann College. His goal on Friday was the game winner in a 2-1 victory. He
added a goal in Saturday's 3-2 victory. Baumann recorded a goal and an assist
in a losing effort as Cortland dropped a 5-4 decision to Lebanon Valley. The rookie
has scored at least a point in all three of Cortland's games so far this season.
October 24, 2005 The State University of New
York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced it's Ice Hockey honors for the
week ending October 23. Buffalo State senior forward Sean Burke (Barrie, ONT/St.
Peter's) has been selected as the SUNYAC Hockey Player of the Week. Joining Burke
with weekly honors are teammate Jonathan Pietrangelo (Port Robinson, ONT/St. Michael's)
is the conference Rookie of the Week and Geneseo sophomore goalie, Derek Jokic
(Peterborough, ONT/Kitchener Dutchmen) was named the Goalie of the Week. Burke
scored three goals over the weekend at the season opening SUNYAC Challenge at
Fredonia. The senior scored twice in a 4-2 victory over SUNY Brockport and added
a goal and an assist in a 6-4 loss to Cortland. Pietrangelo had one assist
in the victory over Brockport and added two goals in the Cortland loss. He scored
the first goal of the game to give the Bengals a 1-0 lead and added a goal in
the third period as Buffalo State tried to mount a comeback. Jokic earned
his first victory ov the season with a 16-save effort against Lebanon Valley.
He allowed just two goals in the game with both coming on Lebanon Valley powerplay
opportunities. He has not allowed an even strength goal this season.
