Geneseo Men and Women Eye Fifth Consecutive Titles

FREDONIA, NY – The 2004 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Cross Country Championships will be held Saturday, October 23 on the campus of SUNY Brockport. The men's race will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the women's race at noon.

The men and women's teams from Geneseo are capable of capturing their fifth consecutive championship, led by 2003 Coach of the Year, Mike Woods. The men finished seventh at the NCAA Division III championships last year, reaching the national meet for just the second time. The women made their tenth appearance in 14 years at the NCAA Division III Cross Country championship meet and claimed their second NCAA Atlantic Region title in three years.

The Geneseo men are led by senior Ted Turner (Wappingers Falls/John Jay), last year's first place finisher at the SUNYAC Championships, and juniors Jeff Beck (Fairport/Fairport), Ross Huncovic (Endwell/Maine-Endwell ), and sophomore Jim Tillapaugh (Carlisle/Cobleskill-Richmondville). Beck (2nd), Huncovic (5th), and Tillapaugh (9th) all were top 15-finishers a year ago.

Geneseo's competition includes three other returning top15-finishers from last year, Plattsburgh's Matt DeShane (Norwood/Norfolk) (7th), Brockport's Scott Austin (Brockport/Caledonia) (8th) and James Davenport (Lansing/Lansing) (14th).

The Geneseo women have five returning top-15 finishers from the 2003. Marta Scott (South Wales/East Aurora) took 5th, Fran Magri (Rochester/Irondequoit) took 6th, Sally Briggs (Fishkill/John Jay) took 7th, Kelly Owens (Baldwinsville/Baker) took 8th and Christina Finke (Fairport/Fairport) finished 14th.
