Cortland Wins Sixth Consecutive SUNYAC Baseball Championship
The Red Dragon's defeat Oneonta in title game
FREDONIA, NY - The Cortland State Red Dragons have
won their sixth consecutive State University of New York Athletic
Conference (SUNYAC) baseball title after defeating Oneonta 6-3
this afternoon in the championship game. This is also their 11th
conference championship in 12 years.
Oneonta got on the board first when Ryan McGinniss (Latham/
Shaker) hit a solo home run over left field in the bottom
of the fourth inning. Neither team would score until Cortland
took the lead in the top of the seventh inning with three runs.
Cory Haggerty (Ilion/Ilion) homered to left field and Jeff
Flegler (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester) hit a two-run home run
to left-center field. Oneonta didn't let Cortland's lead last
long as they scored twice in the bottom of the inning to tie the
game, once on a fielder's choice and once on a wild pitch. Neither
team scored in the eighth inning, but Cortland's Nate Gagnon
(Wilton/ South Glens Falls) hit a three-run shot to right-center
in the top of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie and give Cortland the
SUNYAC title.
Top seed Cortland reached the finals by defeating fourth seed
Brockport 16-5 on Friday and second seed Oneonta 12-3 on Saturday.
Oneonta defeated third seed Utica/Rome 14-0 on Friday and Brockport
6-4 on Saturday to reach the finals and a rematch with Cortland.
Oneonta finished regular season conference play 8-4, and is 22-16
overall
With today's SUNYAC Championship win, Cortland receives an automatic
berth to the Division III NCAA tournament. Cortland finished the
conference regular season with a perfect 12-0 record, and is currently
29-9 overall.
